「喜びにつけ悲しみにつけ、花は不断の友である」

庭園はこの建築の中心であり、木々に囲まれた霊園の核を成すものである」デイヴィッド・チッパーフィールドが提案したコンセプトをランドスケープ・デザインの出発点にした。設計プランは、「猪名川霊園を囲む北摂山系の山々の急勾配に呼応する大きな片流れの屋根を持つ、単一の素材、赤土色に着色したコンクリートで造られた建築」というシンプルで明確なものであり、その赤土色のコンクリートは、40年の歳月がもたらした、霊園のひな壇の石垣の色彩と見事に調和していた。

そこで庭園を猪名川の自然を象徴するものとしてとらえ、その自然に溶け込むような中庭を考えた。『山野草の庭』は精選した67種の草花や低木で構成しており、日本の草原や森ならではの質感や色合い、そして俳句の季語などから着想を得た。草花は開花時期や姿形を、低木は落葉樹の花季、黄葉・紅葉や落葉後の樹形と常緑樹の精気に満ちた姿とのバランスを念頭に置き、四季の移り変わりを感じられるように緻密に配置した。

彩り豊かな『山野草の庭』とは対照的に、礼拝堂の庭は故人を偲び、その想いを振り返り、祈りをささげる場として静謐な『樹々の庭』とした。参拝者が着席した時、目線に映る木は、幹に豊かな表情を持つ猪名川の森に自生するアオダモの木を選んだ。成長が遅く寿命も長いこの樹木は、春には淡雪のような小さな花を咲かせ、夏には爽やかな緑の葉を蓄え、秋には鮮かな紅葉に染まり、冬には幹に白い模様を浮き立たせる。四季折々に見せてくれるその表情は、訪れた人々に移ろいゆく季節を感じさせてくれる。そしてこのアオダモの幹を際立たせ奥行きをつくるため、背景には常緑樹のハイノキを置き、足元はカモジゴケとイノモトソウで覆い、春先にはニリンソウの白い小さな花の絨毯が現れるよう設計した。 “In joy or sadness, flowers are our constant friends.”

“The garden is the heart of the building. Just as the cemetery is surrounded by trees, the garden becomes the nucleus of the place.” David Chipperfield’s concept was the starting point of the landscape design. His architectural plan was pure and extremely clear – a large sloping roof responding to the gradient of the surrounding mountains and all building elements constructed with a single material, earth-like red coloured cast concrete. The coloured concrete resonates with the retaining stone walls, aged by the cemetery’s 40-years history, continuing throughout the grounds.

I imagined the cloister garden to blend into the natural surroundings of Inagawa, taking inspiration from palettes and textures of Japanese meadows and woodlands, and seasonal icons used in haiku poetry. 67 species of native wild flowers, grasses and deciduous and evergreen shrubs were selected for their flowering seasons, autumn foliage, dried silhouettes and bare profiles. They are carefully calibrated to produce a gradually shifting polyphony throughout the seasons.

In contrast to the textural and vivid wildflower garden, the courtyard of the chapel features a serene garden composed with a grove of delicate trees harmonizing with reflection and prayer. Taking the visitors’ seated perspective into account, deciduous Aodamo trees (fraxinus lanuginosa f. serrata) with grey mottled trunks are selected for visual interest. Indigenous to the surrounding forests, the Aodama tree is a hardy, slow-growing hardwood with a long-life expectancy. With feathery white spring blossoms, lime green summer foliage, burgundy autumn foliage and expressive winter trunks, it provides chapel visitors with an awareness of the seasons. A backdrop of evergreen Hai-no-ki (symplocaceae) saplings are planted to highlight the Aodamo's bark and create a sense of depth. Ground cover is Kamoji-goke (moss) and Inomoto-so (pteris multifidi) and Nirin-so (anemone flaccida) producing a carpet of tiny white blossoms in early spring.
